Helping at Home visits people at home in Collingham, Brough and Besthorpe, the villages on the A46 and the Trent north of Newark. A carer comes to the house to help with washing, dressing, meals, medicines and company. The Care Quality Commission rates us Good.
Our office is at 65 London Road in Newark, about seven miles south. We are building a team of carers who live in and around the village. We aim to give each client a core team of up to four carers.
Care at home in Collingham, Brough and Besthorpe
Most people start with one or two visits a day:
- Personal care: help getting washed and dressed in the morning.
- Dementia care at home: carers who get to know the person and keep daily routines.
- Companionship care: company for someone who spends long days on their own.
- Respite care: time off for the family member who does most of the caring.
- Help after a hospital stay: visits in place for the first days home.
- Live-in care: a carer who lives in, as an alternative to a care home.

When the nearest A&E is in Lincoln
Collingham is in Nottinghamshire, but its nearest emergency department is in Lincolnshire. Newark Hospital, about eight miles south, has no A&E. Its Urgent Treatment Centre opens from 8am to 10.30pm and takes its last patient at 9.30pm.
The nearest 24-hour A&E by road is Lincoln County Hospital, about 15 miles away. King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, which most of Newark and Sherwood looks to, is about 27 miles away. Which one depends on what has happened. Tell us the ward and discharge date and we will plan the first visits. If it is urgent, our hospital discharge fast-track is the quickest way to reach us.
The GP practice and help already in the village
Collingham Medical Centre, at 71 High Street, is the GP practice for the village. It is part of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire NHS area.
Home care can sit alongside the village’s own help:
- Collingham Village Care is a local charity that has run since 1982. Its volunteers drive people to medical, hospital, dentist and optician appointments, and to its Greet, Eat n Meet groups.
- The Collingham Rural Advice and Resource Centre, at the Memorial Hall on the High Street, gives advice on benefits, housing and debt. It holds a drop-in on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm and can visit people at home. If you think your Mum or Dad may be entitled to Attendance Allowance, it is a good place to ask.
Planning for the Trent and the Fleet
The Fleet runs along the western edge of Collingham, with the Trent beyond it. During Storm Henk in January 2024, both came out of their banks. Nottinghamshire County Council’s report on the flood found 12 properties in the village flooded inside.

Which council to call
Lincoln is closer, but for a Collingham address the council is Nottinghamshire County Council, on 0300 500 80 80. It carries out the care needs assessment and decides what you pay. How council funding works sets out the steps.
Changes to the house, such as grab rails, ramps and door changes, come under Newark and Sherwood District Council. The occupational therapist visit that starts the process is booked through the county council.
