Our office is at 65 London Road, NG24 1RZ. Not a regional hub, not a call centre in another county. Newark is where the company is registered with the Care Quality Commission, where the care co-ordinators sit, and where the carers live.
That is worth saying plainly, because most live-in care marketing that reaches Newark comes from somewhere else. National brands run their live-in service from a central office and recruit into an area when an enquiry arrives. We were already here.
The gap after 9.30pm
Newark Hospital, on Boundary Road, runs an Urgent Treatment Centre rather than an A&E. It opens at 8am and closes at 10.30pm, with the last patient admitted at 9.30pm.
So for roughly ten hours of every night, the nearest emergency department is King’s Mill in Sutton-in-Ashfield, or Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City in Nottingham. That is a real drive, and it usually means an ambulance rather than a lift from a neighbour.
This is the part of the day live-in care changes most. A carer sleeping in the house is there for the 2am trip to the bathroom, the fall that would otherwise be found at breakfast, and the confusion that builds in someone with dementia after dark. Plenty of families reach us after a night that frightened them.

Which council you deal with
Newark sits in a two-tier area and families conflate the two bodies constantly.
Nottinghamshire County Council handles adult social care: the needs assessment, eligibility, what you contribute and Direct Payments. The number is 0300 500 80 80.
Newark and Sherwood District Council handles changes to the building. Grab rails, ramps, door alterations and larger works. Its published targets are minor adaptations within seven working days of the referral arriving, and major adaptations aimed at 30 days, though some run longer. A Handy Person Adaptation Service covers smaller jobs for residents aged 60 and over or living with a disability.

Where health needs are the main reason care is needed, NHS Continuing Healthcare is assessed by the integrated care board and covers the entire cost of care for those who qualify.

One boundary quirk worth knowing. Long Bennington has a Newark postal address and an NG23 postcode, but it is in Lincolnshire, in South Kesteven. Council-funded care there is administered by Lincolnshire County Council, not Nottinghamshire. Private funding and NHS Continuing Healthcare work identically on both sides.
Live-in care reaches further than our hourly visiting service, because the carer lives in the home rather than driving between calls. The one part affected by distance is break cover. Every live-in carer has a protected daily break, and where a client cannot safely be left alone during it, a second carer comes in. Care is exempt from VAT under the welfare services rules. The client provides the carer’s room and shares meals, so there is no separate accommodation charge. Break cover, where needed, is an additional charge confirmed at assessment.

Employed, not introduced
Most live-in care advertising reaching Newark comes from two kinds of business.
Introductory agencies connect you with a self-employed carer and charge for the introduction. Several of the largest live-in brands work this way and are not themselves registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide personal care.
Franchise branches trade under a national name while each branch is a separate business, with its own owner, its own staff and its own CQC rating.
